AnswerGarden

https://answergarden.ch/ 

A minimalistic online tool useful for real-time participation, feedback, and brainstorming/polls. 

  • PROS: see live responses, good for brainstorming, collaborative, do not need an account to participate, effective for formative assessments, good for visual learners, easy to use, free

  • CONS: responses must be brief, cannot screen answers before posting (students may post something inappropriate), online access required

In a Religion & Life General classroom, Year 11's may be asked to brainstorm the characteristics of a religion. This would be conducted early in the lesson as an informal means of assessing prior knowledge and getting the class thinking about the lesson topic.

  • Substitution: Teacher uses AnswerGarden to brainstorm, instead of using a whiteboard and asking for verbal responses. 

  • Augmentation: Students can continually return and add to AnswerGarden. 

  • Modification: Students can continually return and add to AnswerGarden and draw from the ideas of their peers.

  • Redefinition: Students can invite a class from a different school to contribute to their AnswerGarden. 

Canva

A design tool that can be used to create presentations, flyers, posters, infographics, etc. 

  • PROS: creative, good for visual learners, has a collaborative tool for group work and feedback, teacher can access worksheet templates, free, teacher can comment on and view student work live

  • CONS: easy to be distracted by template choices and features, some premium features behind a paywall, online access required

In a Religion & Life General classroom, Year 11's may be asked to create an infographic outlining a Christian belief and/or teaching.

SCSA: GREL Unit 2

  • the key features of a religious belief and/or teaching

  • Substitution: Students create a poster using Canva, instead of paper.

  • Augmentation: Students share their posters and give each other feedback through Canva collaborative features. 

  • Modification: Students work in a group to create a digital poster using Canva's collaborative features. 

  • Redefinition: Students share their poster with students from another school to collaborate and provide feedback on their poster.

Google Docs

A web-based word processor offered by Google. Useful for creating and collaborating on online documents.

  • PROS: can be accessed from any device online, live collaborative functions, can be easily downloaded, similar to Microsoft word (i.e., familiar), free, automatically saves to server

  • CONS: requires internet access to edit and collaborate, potential privacy issues, students may contribute something inappropriate or delete work

In a Philosophy & Ethics ATAR classroom, after being introduced to pragmatic arguments for the existence of God, Year 12's may be asked to weigh the pros and cons for belief in God. This would be a whole class activity monitored and/or lead by the teacher.

A web-based survey administration software offered by Google. Useful for creating online forms and surveys with multiple question types.

  • PROS: free, easy to use, can create an unlimited number of forms, templates are offered, can add collaborators, useful for opinion surveys 

  • CONS: limited design customisation, requires internet access, require a Google account

In a Religion & Life General classroom, Year 11's may be asked to reflect upon challenges to moral decision-making.

SCSA: GREL Unit 2

  • challenges people encounter when dealing with moral and ethical issues

  • Substitution: Students complete forms online, instead of on paper. 

  • Augmentation: Students complete forms outside of school. Teacher can accumulate student responses on automatic spreadsheet.

  • Modification: Students/teachers can collaboratively analyse and compare results immediately after form completion. 

  • Redefinition: Students/teachers can share and collect data from other schools.

JetPunk

A trivia tool that allows users to take and make quizzes on a variety of subjects.

  • PROS: free, wide variety of topics, ideal for competitive students and rote learners

  • CONS: requires online access, making a quiz can be quite fiddly, not ideal for students who struggle under pressure 

In a Religion & Life General classroom, Year 11's may be asked to look at some key features of Christianity. For a bit of fun, students may do a quiz on various features - such as the books of the Bible or the Ten Commandments.

  • Substitution: Students are quizzed on trivia online, instead of on paper. 

  • Augmentation: Students can immediately review final results. Can be assigned quiz outside of school. 

  • Modification: Students can complete quiz numerous times and review which answers they get correct/wrong most often.

  • Redefinition: Students can review which answers they get correct most often, compared to that of all other users who have completed the quiz worldwide. 

Coggle

A free mind-mapping web-tool. Allows users to customise and share mind-maps.

  • PROS: good for visual learners, easy to export/share, colourful, presentation feature, collaborative features

  • CONS: requires online access, images are difficult to add, only 3 free maps before paywall 

In a Religion & Life General classroom, Year 11's may be asked to create a mind-map outlining a key principle of Catholic Social Teaching.

An online game-based learning platform. A quiz and and interactive lesson tool similar to Kahoot!

  • PROS: free, student reports for teachers, can add memes, design freedom, integrates with Google Classroom, engaging assessment tool, can search quizzes made by other users, students can move through questions individually or as a group

  • CONS: a limit to the kinds of questions you can ask, not for elaborate questioning, multiple choice only, required internet access, 

In a Philosophy & Ethics ATAR classroom, Year 11's may be asked to complete a quiz to recall what they have learned about informal logical fallacies.

SCSA: PHIL Unit 2

  • identifying some of the major informal fallacies, including the genetic fallacy, ad hominem arguments, hasty generalisation, argument from irrelevant authority, argument from ignorance and equivocation

  • Substitution: Students complete online quiz, instead of on paper. 

  • Augmentation: Students can immediately see and compare responses with other students while remaining anonymous. 

  • Modification: Students can see review responses and receive feedback immediately.

  • Redefinition: Teacher can use quiz data to ascertain what areas students need to improve upon.

A cloud-based, real-time, collaborative web platform in which upload, organise, and share content to digital bulletin boards.

  • PROS: easy to use, intuitive, customisable, can include most media/files, posts saved automatically, no account needed for participation, collaborative

  • CONS: paywall for more advanced features (e.g., larger files), privacy limited due to all posts being visible, cannot screen answers before they're posted (students may post something inappropriate)

In a Religion & Life General classroom, Year 11's may be asked to submit their work on a Padlet, facilitating the jigsaw technique in the classroom.

In a Philosophy & Ethics ATAR classroom, Year 12's may be asked to complete a worksheet, guiding them through an analysis of Anselm's ontological argument for the existence of God.
